The Director of People Relations & Compliance leads the organization’s approach to employee relations, workplace investigations, employee resource groups (ERGs) and policy administration. This role ensures we maintain a fair, legally sound, and respectful workplace—while also guiding leaders through complex employee issues with clarity and confidence. This person will oversee policies and practices that protect the company and support a positive employee experience. They’ll also lead a team (or serve as the go-to expert) in resolving escalated workplace concerns, managing risk, and partnering with legal as needed.  This role is focused on building a respectful, inclusive, and equitable workplace culture where every team member feels valued and empowered to succeed. The Director will lead the design, implementation, and management of programs related to employee relations, HR policy governance, compliance training, and workplace investigations. With a strong focus on accountability and alignment with legal and ethical standards, this leader will play a critical role in resolving complex workplace issues, enhancing performance, and reinforcing a positive team member experience. The Director will ensure consistent application of HR practices across the organization and establish consistent policies and procedures across the People team.

 

What you’ll be doing 

 

Manages and carries out the personnel actions for direct reports, including but not limited to hiring and scheduling; training and evaluating; coaching and managing performance; making salary, merit, or other compensation recommendations for team of direct reports; and making recommendations and/or taking corrective or disciplinary action as appropriate.
  • Lead, develop, and scale the People Relations and Compliance teams to drive strategic and consistent impact across the organization. 
  • Set the strategic direction for People relations to deliver culturally responsive, equity-minded, and confidential support to team members and managers.  Oversee the People Relations function, including enterprise-wide people relations strategy and complex workplace investigations.  Manage high-risk investigations involving alleged misconduct, harassment, or policy violations, ensuring consistency, confidentiality, and legal compliance.  Advise managers and team members on sensitive people relations issues, including performance management, disciplinary actions, and workplace concerns. 
  • Design and lead fairness audits and inclusion assessments to evaluate the equity and effectiveness of people relations practices. 
  • Lead effective employee resource groups (ERGs) focused on inclusion, engaging & supporting team members, and impacting change at HealthEquity 
  • Analyze trends and systemic issues to improve workplace culture and proactively address concerns. 
  • Establish and maintain comprehensive compliance programs aligned with employment laws (e.g., FMLA, ADA, FLSA, EEO, I-9), including audit frameworks and risk mitigation strategies. 
  • Partner with Legal to oversee HealthEquity’s compliance training program, ensuring regulatory alignment, strong participation rates, and measurable effectiveness. 
  • Lead policy governance, including the development, maintenance, and communication of people team handbooks, SOPs, and company policies. 
  • Monitor and ensure organization-wide adherence to policies, procedures, and ethical standards. 
  • Represent the People Team as a core member of the background check committee reviewing background checks for compliance adherence. 
  • Ensure all people programs are designed and executed equitably, promoting a respectful and inclusive workplace. 
  • Design and deliver impactful training programs, including unconscious bias training, to drive cultural awareness and inclusive behaviors. 
  • Develop and execute audit plans to evaluate people practices, ensuring they are fair, inclusive, and effective. 
  • Design and enforce legally sound HR policies and procedures that reflect best practices and promote consistency, fairness, and transparency. 
  • Oversee the review and continuous improvement of People team processes, ensuring alignment with company values and legal standards.  

 

What you will need to be successful

  • A Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Social Sciences, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred. A Master's degree in a relevant field is a plus. 
  • 15+ years of progressive HR experience in HR compliance, policy management, and/or employee relations 
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate concepts to diverse audiences and influence stakeholders at all levels. 
  • Strong understanding of employment law and regulations. 
  • Experience leading and managing compliance training programs. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective policies and procedures that promote fairness and equal opportunity. 
  • Experience conducting audits and investigations, with a focus on identifying and addressing potential biases. 
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills. 
  • Strong analytical skills and experience using data to track program effectiveness, measure impact, and inform strategic decision-making. 
  • Proven ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders across all levels of the organization. 
  • Passion for fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace culture where everyone feels they belong and can thrive. 
  • Excellent organizational, coaching, and leadership skills, including ability to lead and support diverse teams. 
  • Experience creating and improving structures, processes, and systems that enable organizations to grow and succeed. 
  • Strong analytical skills and experience using data to track program effectiveness, measure impact, and inform strategic decision-making. 
  • Emotionally intelligent and culturally aware communication skills, especially in the following settings: addressing conflict, sensitive employee relations situations, implementing organizational change, influencing decisions, and building trust with the workforce. 
  • Effective conflict resolution skills and the ability to navigate sensitive, emotional, or difficult situations with empathy. 
  • Ability to develop and maintain an equitable and inclusive workplace through interactions, decisions, and recommendations. 
  • Demonstrated expertise in employment law, HR investigations, policy development, and regulatory compliance 
  • Occasional travel to attend training or meetings may be required.
  • Work requires normal range of hearing, vision and verbal communication skills, with or without a reasonable accommodation. 
  • Must be able to use a telephone or headset equipment and operate a keyboard and other office equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  • Must be able to spend prolonged periods of each workday on the phone 
  • The ability to perform work at a computer station for 6-8+ hours a day and function in an environment with frequent interruptions is required. 
  • Must be able to lift and move material weighing up to 20 lbs 
  • May experience elevated levels of stress during periods of increased activity and with work entailing multiple deadlines.  
 
PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP strongly preferred

Salary Range

$133000.00 To $173000.00 / year

The actual compensation offer is determined based on job-related knowledge, education, skills, experience, and work location.
